This Perennial Kale (Brassica oleracea var. ramosa) is a cold-hardy, open-pollinated leafy green that thrives in northern climates. Each pack contains 20 seeds selected for vigor, mixed colors, and long-term productivity.

Unlike annual kale or collards, this perennial variety does not bolt during summer—it keeps growing taller through the season, producing tender leaves for months on end. In our own Toronto Zone 6 garden, we've grown it both in pots and in-ground with great results. These hardy greens can even be sown in sub-zero weather and begin sprouting as soon as the snow melts.

We harvest them regularly as cut-and-come-again greens—not as ornamental showpieces, but as real food from a real garden. All the photos are taken from our own beds, so they may not be picture-perfect, but they reflect the practical beauty of a resilient, productive crop.

More details for winter care: 💓

This type of perennial kale (often categorized with tree kale or Daubenton-type kales) can survive down to Zone 3 or 4 with protection. It is especially tolerant of cold when:

  • Mulched in winter

  • Grown in a sheltered microclimate

  • Snow cover offers insulation

In Toronto (Zone 6), it survives easily without much winter care. In harsher zones (Zone 3–4), gardeners have reported success overwintering with deep mulch or row covers. So yes — it's cold-hardy to at least Zone 4, and possibly Zone 3 in well-managed settings.
