Hundredfold Note:

I’ll never forget those weekend trips to the garden center with my family, wandering every aisle in search of the perfect rose. In our household, everyone loves roses. We were captivated by their elegant blooms, their perfumery fragrance, and the lively, buzzing world within their branches.

But time and again, the perfect roses were buried under Toronto’s snow. Every beautiful hybrid we nurtured would eventually surrender to the winter.

Then, years ago, I stumbled upon a true survivor—the native Swamp Rose, thriving where it belonged. That discovery changed my journey. I never looked back. I realized that no matter how fancy the imported roses are, they aren't ours. Bred in the gentle climates of Europe and Asia, they simply aren't built for our Canadian winters, and they can't support the local insects and birds that need them.

Now, my native roses are the most carefree plants in my garden. However dry the summer or harsh the winter, they stand proud and resilient. This is their home, after all. Their life cycle is a beautiful, year-round gift to the local wildlife: metallic sweat bees visit in the spring, cut-leaf bees in the summer, goldfinches feast on the rosehips in autumn, and mockingbirds find shelter among their branches in winter.

I’ve learned that different native roses thrive in different homes. The Swamp Rose (Rosa palustris) is a water-lover, perfect for that constantly wet spot in your yard. The Smooth Rose (Rosa blanda), true to its name with its nearly thornless canes, is a tough, adaptable beauty that prefers a sunny, well-drained spot. It’s all about finding the right plant for the right place.
