Deer tongue grass is a native grass with an exotic bamboo-like appearance. The winter rosettes of this plant make a good evergreen ground cover. It prefers partial sun, moist conditions, and sandy soil. Under ideal conditions, this grass can spread aggressively.
Because the plant tolerates acid soils and thin, infertile soils, it can be used to re-vegetate reclaimed land such as mine spoils.

  • Each package contains 500 open-pollinated seeds
  • Hundredfold has been a Canadian trademark since 2017. Good fruits multiply.
  • Deer tongue grass is a Canada native grass, found naturally along river banks and lowlands
  • It flowers twice a year, resulting in two seed crops annually
  • The seeds attract many types of birds, such as turkeys
  • Deer tongue can be a native substitute for the Eurasia-originated blue fescue

Hundredfold Notes: We conducted a quick survey in a big box store nursery recently in Toronto. Only one species of native plant, which was false blue indigo was found among dozens of species. The ornamental grasses were all introduced outside of North America.
