Our passion for native oak is rooted in the love towards this land and the lives she fosters. Every swamp white oak supports a local ecosystem. Unlike the massive red oaks and bur oaks, swamp white oaks are smaller in size, which enables the trees to fit in backyards, front lawns, or other smaller properties.

About native oaks:

A single native acorn carries blessings from thousands of years of genetic heritage. Oaks and chestnuts were once standing side by side in the Eastern North America forests; they were dominant tree covers. The chestnuts have been wiped out by 1950. Oaks have since taken the place of the chestnuts and become king of the forest. Yet, the native oak population of North America is diminishing from coast to coast.  In British Colombia alone, the Garry oaks' habitat has decreased by 95% in the last two centuries.

To prevent the history of American chestnut from repeating, one needs to act proactively to sustain our native oaks. Plant an oak tree today; you will be a true hero for many generations to come.

 🌱Frequently Asked Questions About Acorns

Q: I did a float test and many acorns floated. Are they bad?
A: Not necessarily. The float test is only reliable immediately after acorns are freshly collected. All of our acorns are tested at harvest and selected carefully before storage.

Acorns are living organisms. Even in refrigeration, they continue to breathe and slowly use stored energy, which can reduce their weight over time. Because of this natural process, some viable acorns may float later on. For stored seeds, the float test is not a dependable indicator of germination.

Q: Should I float test the acorns when I receive them?
A: We recommend not doing so. Float testing after storage can give misleading results and may also wash away beneficial native microbes that naturally support healthy germination and early growth.

Q: Why buy acorns from Hundredfold?
A:

  1. Canada’s largest selection of native oak species – We offer 7 oak species, all native to North America.
  2. Hands-on growing experience – We don’t just sell seeds; we grow oak saplings ourselves and understand every stage from acorn to tree.
  3. Years of practical expertise – We have spent years working with oak trees and understand their life cycle, storage needs, and germination behavior.
  4. Nature-first approach – Our seeds come with their natural microbial companions, supporting stronger and healthier seedlings.

A note from us:
We’re not just selling seeds—we’re trying, in our small way, to help more trees take root in a world where natural habitats are shrinking. If you have space for even one oak, we’d be honoured to be part of that journey.
