A Tender Love

It is hard to describe love to someone who has rarely felt it. Yet when it arrives, no one can deny its presence.

So it is with spring ephemeral.

These tender perennials appear only for a fleeting moment, gracing the forest floor before the canopy trees leaf out and return the land to shade. To stand among them in bloom—white trillium, May apple, spring beauty, trout lily—is to be immersed in a quiet, natural awe. It feels like falling in love: a warmth and harmony so complete that you momentarily forget yourself.

In that moment, there is only one wish—

let this last forever.

But it doesn’t. Return two weeks later, and they are gone.

I am writing this in the heart of winter, as the calendar turns to a new year. In 2026, may you treat yourself—and those you hold dear—with even greater kindness. Take time to seek out spring ephemerals in a woodland near you, or invite their fleeting magic into your own garden.

In Southern Ontario, white trillium usually opens in late April. Further north, she takes
her time.
