This wildflower is named after Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied, Germany, who led an expedition into the American West in the 1830s when others were busy logging (cutting down trees) in New England.
This sunflower is valuable to prairie grasslands, providing food to many types of bees and birds. In addition to its beautiful flowers, it is palatable to deer and livestock, making it a real American treasure.
Hundredfold Note:
This sunflower is an absolute blessing. It brings color, fragrance, and a whole lot of birds to our urban garden. First, we welcome goldfinches, which often come in pairs. The goldfinches are a nice touch to any garden with their glittering gold feather.
After we get bored of the goldfinches, here come the low-key but high-pitch rose finches. Interestingly, the rose finches, also come in pairs. That doubles the sound effects of the bird songs. When they sing, all of us stop the work and listen. The song is like a paradise rehearsal.
