Hundredfold Note: A True Toronto Native Mint

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), a member of the mint family, is truly wild in Toronto. This fragrant native herb grows naturally across the Greater Toronto Area and can even be found in High Park. If you’re in Hamilton, you might spot it growing right in your neighborhood.

Native from coast to coast in Canada, Wild Bergamot is a beautiful reminder of our natural heritage. Unfortunately, like many Ontario native plants, it often loses ground to invasive species — even to its own cousin, Heal-all (Prunella vulgaris), another mint-family member.

To support this true Toronto native, it’s best to source your seeds from a reputable company rather than collecting from the wild. Compared to many native perennials, Wild Bergamot is easy to grow. I keep it in my garden - it thrives on its own and asks for nothing in return. All the photos in this listing were taken right here in my garden.
