Bring Back a Rare Native Wildflower — Riddell’s Goldenrod (Solidago riddellii)
Once widespread across Ontario, Riddell’s Goldenrod has become extremely rare—even absent from many conservation areas. This native perennial deserves a place in our backyards, where it can thrive once again.
This species produces bright, showy blooms in late summer through early fall. With staggered blooming among individual plants, it extends the flowering season—providing a steady source of nectar for native pollinators.
According to Professor Douglas Tallamy, goldenrods support over 115 species of native butterflies and moths, making them a keystone plant for healthy ecosystems. They also attract native bees and help feed songbirds through fall and winter.
