Grow an Exotic Native Vine with Edible Fruits
Maypop (Passiflora incarnata) is one of North America's most spectacular native vines — and one of its best-kept secrets. Its intricate purple flowers look tropical, smell sweet, and attract pollinators all season long. With winter care, it produces edible yellowish-green fruits with a flavour reminiscent of passionfruit. Photographed in our Toronto trial garden.
Why Grow Maypop?
- Stunning blooms: Large, exotic-looking purple flowers with a crown of filaments and a sweet fragrance
- Edible fruits: Develops passionfruit-like fruits when given winter protection — a rare treat in Canadian gardens
- Pollinator magnet: Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds throughout the growing season
- Vigorous climber: Can reach up to 6 metres — ideal for fences, trellises, and arbours
- North American native: Hardy and well-adapted to temperate climates
Growing Notes
- Germination: Sow in spring — seeds emerge late (hence "Maypop," as they sprout in May). Stratification improves germination rates.
- Winter care: Not fully hardy in Canadian winters; grow in containers and move indoors when temperatures drop, or mulch heavily in milder zones
- Sun: Full sun to part shade; prefers well-drained soil
