A Native Tree Worth Growing

Flowering Dogwood is one of the most beautiful trees native to eastern North America. In early spring, before the leaves even open, it bursts into a cloud of white blooms that stop people in their tracks. Come fall, the foliage turns a deep scarlet and the branches hold clusters of bright red berries that birds flock to. It is a four-season tree that earns its place in any garden.

What You Should Know

  • Native to Southern Ontario, particularly the Carolinian Zone
  • Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 7; requires winter protection in colder regions
  • Indeterminate growth habit with showy spring flowers, red fall fruit, and scarlet autumn foliage
  • The hardwood is extremely shock-resistant and has historically been used for weaving shuttles and tool handles
  • Attractive to birds and pollinators throughout the season
  • 10 open-pollinated seeds per packet, packed and shipped from Ontario, Canada
  • Seed origin: USA

Growing Notes

Flowering Dogwood seeds require cold stratification before germination. Sow in fall for natural stratification outdoors, or refrigerate seeds in moist medium for 90 to 120 days before spring sowing. Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil with partial to full sun. Young trees benefit from mulching and consistent moisture during establishment.
