Eastern hemlock is many people's favorite tree. First, it is non-toxic and very edible, so it is safe to be around. Second, it is shade tolerant, so it can grow in places where no other conifer can. Third, due to its moisture-loving nature, it has a lower fire risk. Most of all, it emits a calming pine-needle fragrance.
It is documented that conifer fragrance can cross the blood-brain barrier to reach the brain and reduce anxiety and depression. That is why taking a walk in a forest has such a calming and refreshing effect. While other pine trees have their "personalities" and do whatever they like, this hemlock is highly obedient and responds well to pruning and training.
