Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica) is a native Ontario shrub with lemon-scented leaves, spring flowers for butterflies, and fiery red-orange fall color. It grows fast, forms low thickets, and thrives in dry, sunny spots.
Sadly, this beautiful plant is becoming rare around Toronto as invasive European Buckthorn takes over its habitat. Buckthorn spreads aggressively—and it loves the same conditions.
By planting Fragrant Sumac in your yard or natural space, you’re helping local wildlife, restoring native biodiversity, and standing up to a destructive invader.
Why grow it?
– Native to Toronto & Eastern Canada
– Drought-tolerant and pest-free
– Attracts butterflies & birds
– Great for naturalizing & erosion control
– Helps fight Buckthorn invasion
Let’s bring back the lemony sumac and protect what’s ours—one plant at a time.
